switch 2012 - Selected artists announced

The selection process.

Earlier this month I travelled to Trongate 103 in Glasgow to sit on the curatorial panel of switch 2012.

After a long day of heated deliberation we decided that the following artists will have their work shown on the streets of Nenagh in February.

Sarah Buckius, Aiken/USA,
Flatform, Milano/Italy,
Paul Grimmer, Newcastle upon Tyne/UK,
Fergus Fullarton Pegg, Glasgow/UK,
Mark Neville, Glasgow/UK,
Lucie Kim & Felix von der Weppen, New York/USA,
David Theobald, East Twickenham/UK,
Nathalie Lavoie, Fort Simpson/Canada

The theme this year was 'Balance' and about 150 artists from around the globe entered their work.

Congratulations to those artists selected.

switich 2012 - Call for Entries

switch is an event that promotes and shows contemporary works of moving image in a public context. It offers an alternative way to navigate familiar places, creating new encounters. switch has to date shown the artworks of 23 international artists who have through the project invited the public into their practice, ideas and viewpoints. switch locates itself outside of the big city and applies itself to the rhythm of smaller places.

The 4th annual installment of switch invites you to take part. Artists working with film/video/animation are invited to submit works responding to the theme of Balance.

To submit click here.

The deadline for submission is Tuesday 1st November 2011.

The clip below shows my video piece untitled(2006) documented on the streets of Nenagh during switch 2009.

Petros Chrisostomou

I've moved to London. The first exhibition I've visited is the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Acadamy of Arts. Out of the hundreds of artists on show Petros Chrisostomou caught my eye.

A text on his website states that he 'photographs small-scale, ordinary, ephemeral objects in architectural models that he constructs himself, and then dramatically arranges, often employing lighting and staging conventions of the theatre. With the alteration of scale and reversal of the relation between object and environment, between imaginary and real space, his photographs challenge the viewer's visual certainties. The illusionary effect he achieves highlights the artist's playful approach, which fluctuates between mimicry of the real world and construction of a surreallistic reality.'

Hula Hula

untitled, 2011, potato snacks, cable ties
I've been clearing out my studio in preparation for my move to London. Came across this small sculpture I made a while ago. Smelled a bit musty, so 'edible art' it is not.

David Sherry - 'Holding Phones, Counting Cars, Flights of Geometry' at Mother's Tankstation, Dublin

Glasgow based artist David Sherry is showing in Mother's Tankstation, Watling St, Dublin 8. 23 February - 26 March 2011.

Sherry's humourous explorations in performance, video, sculpture and drawing border on the ridiculous. Rooted in the objects and procedures of the everyday his darkly comical work commandeers what we know and steers it into altogether unknown territory.

Wilfredo Prieto

Work from Cuban artist Wilfredo Prieto. Prieto's work highlights many elements including 'conceptual force, narrative brevity, lack of superfluous elements, insisting references to the artistic practice, a delicate sense of humour, puns and poetry with an equal share of persistence and subtlety. Ultimately, his work consists of drawing the most direct line from the original idea to its execution. It is difficult to explain the precision and thoroughness of the artist. His work is the result of a scrupulous commitment, which helps him to consider all of the formal and conceptual aspects as well as to remove any redundancy from his proposals.'

Grasa, jabón, plátano, 2006, grease, soap and banana.

Poema finito, 2001, coins and glue.

Untitled (pea), 2002, ink and chickpea.
